Soaking in Adventure: Our Journey to Fifth Water Hot Springs

November 2024

Sometimes, the best adventures aren’t about reaching a summit but finding serenity along the way. That’s exactly what we experienced on our recent hike to Fifth Water Hot Springs. Nestled in the heart of Diamond Fork Canyon, this hike had it all — scenic trails, cascading waterfalls, and natural hot springs that felt like nature’s spa. Here’s a recap of our unforgettable day.

The Trailhead: First Steps Toward Adventure
Our adventure began at the Three Forks Trailhead, an easily accessible spot with plenty of parking (though it fills up fast on weekends). Unfortunately the road to the trailhead is closed once it snows, so we parked in the winter overflow parking lot, which added about 3 miles round trip to our hike. The crisp morning air carried the promise of something special. Bundled up in layers, we set off on the trail, which meanders through picturesque canyons lined with red rock and juniper trees. The snowy scene felt like were in a Hallmark Christmas movie!

The trail’s gentle incline makes it approachable for most skill levels. It’s a perfect mix of effort and reward — challenging enough to feel accomplished but not so tough that it’s overwhelming. Along the way, we stopped to take in the views, snap photos, and chat with other hikers.

Sights & Sounds: Nature’s Symphony
There’s something magical about hearing the rush of water long before you can see it. The sound of Fifth Water Creek grew louder as we approached the iconic waterfalls. Crystal-clear water cascaded down rock faces, creating an ethereal mist that danced in the air. We couldn’t resist taking a break here to soak in the sights and snap a few photos. It’s moments like these that remind us why we hike — to be surrounded by nature’s beauty.

The Main Attraction: Fifth Water Hot Springs
After a little over an hour of hiking, we spotted the light blue and turquoise pools that make Fifth Water so famous. The hot springs are a series of natural soaking pools fed by geothermal activity. Each pool varies in temperature, with the upper pools being the hottest. The colors were stunning — vibrant blues and greens that looked almost too surreal to be real.

We wasted no time shedding our hiking boots and layers to dip into the warm, soothing waters. It’s hard to describe the feeling of sitting in a natural hot spring surrounded by towering canyon walls, with steam rising around you. Time seemed to stand still as we chatted, laughed, and simply enjoyed the stillness of the moment. We also brought along some hot chocolate to keep the warmth going!

Pro Tips for Future Hikers

  1. Start Early: This is a popular trail, and the pools can get crowded. Arriving early ensures you’ll have a more peaceful experience.
  2. Pack Smart: Bring water, snacks, and a towel. Water shoes are a game-changer when navigating the rocky pool bottoms.
  3. Leave No Trace: Pack out what you pack in. It’s up to all of us to keep this spot as pristine as we found it.
  4. Check the Weather: Winter hikes here are magical, but the trail can get icy. Traction devices for your shoes are a wise choice.
  5. Be Mindful of Sulfur Smell: The hot springs have a distinct “rotten egg” smell due to the sulfur in the water, but you’ll get used to it after a while.

The Hike Back: Refreshed & Rejuvenated
It’s amazing how a good soak can completely rejuvenate your body. We dried off, laced up our boots, and began the journey back. The trail felt different on the way down — lighter somehow. We’d come looking for an adventure and found something even better: a renewed sense of peace.

Final Reflections
Our hike to Fifth Water Hot Springs was more than just a day on the trail. It was a chance to pause, reconnect with nature, and share in a collective experience with other hikers who had the same goal: to soak in the adventure (literally). If you’re looking for a hike that’s as rewarding as it is relaxing, put this one on your list.
